"one kind word can warm three winter months"
have you ever heard of hygge (hoo-gah)? originally, hygge was defined as a way of surviving Scandinavian winters. hygge like wintertime is about creating a warm atmosphere, taking pleasure in simple things and enjoying good conversations with family and friends. it’s the Nordic secret to a happy winter.
ways to hygge and bring happiness to winter:
perspective – the winter season is not easy to deal with but perhaps we can decide to think about it differently. we can embrace the subtle beauty and calmness that winter brings. the most important is our psychology and how we interpret winter.
really comfy sweaters, socks, slippers and blankets – soft blankets and comfy clothes are the perfect thing to have when it gets cold. i’m not the biggest winter person, so this time of year i do like to get a few nice sweaters and wrap myself in blankets.
get some daylight – sit by the window as often as possible or step outside each morning for a few minutes to get natural light even if it’s gray and super cold.
activate the senses – the quickest way to activate good feelings is to stimulate the senses. this can be with a few spritz of lavender on your pillow or a eucalyptus shower. you could wear something bright and colorful, or pick out some flowers. colors can awake the human psyche in a positive way and make us more happy.
little things – if you’re someone who is sensitive to colder weather and you have that seasonal shift in your mood, really prioritize and invest time in doing things that will make you feel good.
warm, cozy home – the home is the true source of happiness and peace. create a home atmosphere that brings you a restful feeling.
plan a few things – plan a few intimate and relaxed gatherings with family and friends, so you have something to look forward to. it’s amazing how much energy you get from days like these.
thanks for introducing us to a cool new concept, i would’ve never known what ‘hygge’ is LOL
I had no idea this concept existed! I even read parts of this to my roommate because I feel like we are both going through the motions of winter right now and needed this!!
